Can’t Get Enough
This is the first in what will hopefully end up being a series of music articles. My musical preferences are extremely wide ranging, and generally have little to do with the mainstream. This is because I haven’t listened to radio or watched MTV/MuchMusic in years. I do, however, spend a ton of time in great clubs and am blessed to have a fair number of friends who are working musicians.
Get Used To It
Over the last few weeks there have been a few things I can’t get enough of. The one song that inspired this article is “I Don’t Know (Why I Love You)” by the Brand New Heavies from their latest record, Get Used To It. As I understand it, this is a cover of a song originally performed by the Jackson Five, written by Stevie Wonder. Killer track. It’s was also the opening single for the record, and the only one marked as “A Tom Moulton Mix“, Tom Moulton being of Salsoul fame. More on that in a minute. As if that weren’t enough, this is the first record fronted by NDea Davenport since the 1994 record Brother Sister which is one of my favourite records of all time.
I haven’t had time to absorb the entire record, but there are clearly some things to love on here. Track 7 - Right On seems very interesting as well. I know a local band which will cover it very well.
Latin Rap from 1969
Speaking of Salsoul, one of the founders of that fine label was a gent named Joe Bataan - the king of Latin Soul. I was listening to internet radio one day when I came across a song called Subway Joe. Instantly catchy, I found it difficult to believe this latin rap song had been recorded way back in 1969. I’d love to own a copy if anyone knows where I can get one.
That’s a Good F*cking Song!
My other recent obsession is Metric. I had only heard of them within the last year when they visited Halifax while promoting their latest record, Live It Out. It’s a fantastic record, but I didn’t really fall in love with them until Steve handed me a copy of their previous record, Old World Underground, Where Are You Now. Track 7 - On A Slow Night had me stop what I was doing and say to myself, “Wow, that’s a good f*cking song.” Give it a spin.
